Story

"The more I trusted you" was written by David Goodman, Steve Webb and Billy Davidson. It was inspired by a true story by one of their favorite singers, Al Green.

On October 18, 1974, sometime after Al Green Explores Your Mind was released, Mary Woodson White, a girlfriend of Green's, assaulted him before committing suicide at his Memphis home. Although she was already married, White reportedly became upset when Green refused to marry her. At some point during the evening, White doused Green with a pan of boiling grits while he was bathing, causing severe burns on Green's back, stomach and arms. She then found his .38 and killed herself. The police found in her purse a note that read

"The more i trusted you, the more you let me down.

Lyrics

I wasn’t lonely, I didn’t need anyone

The last time love defeated, me I swore that I was done
Then I met you baby, and I let my guard back down
The more I trusted you, the more you let me down

I gave you everything, that I had to give
Believed you when you told me,
I was why you lived
I had my back turned baby, you left without a sound
The more I trusted you, the more you let me down

The more I trust in you, the more you let me down
The more I stay at home, the more you ran around
When I needed you baby, you're nowhere to be found
The more I trusted you,

The more you let me down

You begged me for the rope, to help you hang yourself
Then you hung me out to dry, and put me through this hell
Before you left me swingin’ baby, I wrote thie letter down
The more I trusted you, the more you let me down

The more I trust in you, the more you let me down
The more I stay at home, the more you ran around
When I need you baby, you're nowhere to be found
The more I trusted you,

The more you let me down
